"I have such a busy and hectic schedule, plus I don't think I would be comfortable in sitting in some office talking about my problems. This e-therapy really works for me!"
Not all of us have the ideal 9-5 job. Between shift work, on-call and let's not forget the kids and other family responsibilities, it's tough to schedule yet another appointment! Just trying to get the kid to soccer practice on time is a real chore. You can't even imagine having to book in weekly therapy! Or maybe it's not about your schedule but rather your comfort level. Just the idea of walking in to an office and sitting down on some leather couch (even though I actually don't have one!) to talk about your problems totally scares you and turns you off! Even on the best of days, walking in busy stores and malls pushes your anxiety through the roof.
Online counselling is designed for these exact reasons. I use different terms such as online counselling, video counselling, e-counselling or e-therapy. It all means the same thing. You get to experience and participate in a counselling session from the comfort of your own home. Or from your office. Or even from your smartphone!
Doxy.me is a program that I have been using that provides a secure video and messaging program to assist healthcare practioners in meeting with their clients and patients. There is no software to download. All you have to do is go to doxy.me/paullucas, enter your name and that's it. Works well with most computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones, as long as you have an internet connection.
The actual counselling session runs the same way as if we were to do it in person. They run for about 60 minutes and the cost is the same.
To get the most out of e-counselling, it's best to be in a quiet area. Microphones on computers and phones picks up background noise really good. So a nice quiet place where you can speak privately is best.
Online counselling is great for individuals, couples and teens.
